Tony Stewart unveils Southern 500 throwback paint scheme honoring Bobby Allison

Stewart’s car in next month’s Darlington race will resemble the design on Allison’s car when he won the Southern 500 in consecutive years.

Tony Stewart has never won a Darlington Speedway Sprint Cup race, but his final opportunity to do so will come in a car paying homage to a guy who knows all about winning at NASCAR’s legendary track.

Stewart will drive a Coca-Cola sponsored Chevrolet in next month’s Southern 500 that mirrors the car NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison drove to consecutive victories at Darlington in 1971 and 1972. The two cars are nearly identical (including gold wheels) with the only major difference in the schemes being the numbers -- Stewart’s is No. 14, while Allison used No. 12.

The Southern 500 is considered one of the sport’s crown jewel events, and Stewart is seeking his first Darlington win in what is his final start at the track that’s hosted NASCAR’s premier division since 1950. He won an Xfinity Series race there in 2008

Since moving back to its Labor Day weekend a year ago, Darlington has designed the weekend as way to honor NASCAR’s roots by encouraging teams to race throwback paint schemes. Thirty of 43 cars comprising the field in the 2015 Southern 500 had throwback paint schemes, and that number is expected to increase for this year’s edition held on Sept. 4.
