Olympics 2016: Rowing canceled on Day 2 amid fears of capsizing

James Dator
James Dator has been covering a wide range of sports for SB Nation for over a decade, with a special focus on the NFL.

The story leading up to the 2016 Rio Olympics was the quality of the water rowers would be competing on, but on Sunday the focus was on what was happening above it. Competition was canceled following concerns strong winds and choppy waters could lead to boats capsizing.

Day 1 of the games saw the Serbian double scull team sink due to the conditions. Officials decided they wouldn’t risk that happening again. Initially a two hour delay was in force, but following a second check the decision was made to cancel competition altogether.

Initially it may seem like high winds shouldn’t be much of a concern, but video shot from the venue shows an incredible amount of water pooling in the boat of the Great Britain men’s foursome, which had to be dumped out by the team.

There has not been an announcement at this time how the rowing events will be rescheduled due to the day’s cancellations.
