As Team USA coach Martha Karolyi looks toward retirement, she’ll have this fond memory of her team bringing home the gold in the team all-around on Tuesday.

The United States women were heavily favored to take home the gold, and they did, dominating from the very first event. After the first rotation, when the US women competed on the vault, Team USA had a narrow lead with a total score of 46.866. Russia was in second at 46.166, and Great Britain was in third with a score of 44.866.

The second rotation for the US women was the uneven bars, and Madison Kocian, the reigning world champion in this event, dominated, scoring 15.933. It was the only individual event for Gabby Douglas, who also turned in a strong performance, scoring 15.766. Simone Biles turned in a fairly average performance, with a score of 14.800, and Team USA maintained its lead with an overall score of 93.365.

China slipped into second place following the second rotation with a score of 89.339., and Russia fell to third with a score of 88.923.

For the third rotation, the American women hit the balance beam and expanded their lead over China. Aly Raisman (15.000), Laurie Hernandez (15.233) and Simone Biles (15.300) all had strong showings on the beam, and after the rotation, Team USA had an overall score of 138.898. In second place, China trailed the United States by nearly five points with a score of 133.937, and after a lackluster showing by the Russian Federation team, Japan moved into third with a score of 131.772.

The fourth rotation was the floor routine for Team USA, and they dominated. The combination of Laurie Hernandez, Simone Biles and Aly Reisman scored 45.999 in the event. It brought Team USA’s total score to 184.897, securing the gold medal. Russia won silver with a score of 176.688, and China took home the bronze with a score of 176.003.
