Olympic medal count 2016: The United States still leads in overall total

Team USA remains on top of the overall medal count, but China has taken the lead in gold medals.

With medal opportunities remaining Tuesday evening in swimming (the women’s 200m freestyle and individual medley and the men’s 200m butterfly and 4x200m freestyle relay), the United States remains on top of the medal count with a total of 22. China has taken the lead in gold medals with seven. Team USA has six gold medals.

Team USA added a bronze to its collection Tuesday as Phillip Dutton, the United States’ oldest competing Olympian, medaled in the equestrian individual eventing jumping final, riding his horse Mighty Nice.

Michael Jung of Germany won gold in the equestrian individual eventing jumping final in London in 2012, and also took home the gold Tuesday, making Jung only the third equestrian in the history of this event to win back-to-back gold medals in his first two Olympic appearances. France’s Astier Nicolas took home the silver.

Travis Stevens brought home the first medal in men’s judo for the United States after securing the silver against Khasan Khalmurzaev of Russia, the top-ranked judoka in the world. Stevens overcame a great deal to be able to compete in Rio, having suffered a devastating leg injury that nearly resulted in amputation just a year ago.

As expected, the United States women’s gymnastics team walked away with the gold after a dominant performance in the team all-around competition. Team USA remained in the lead throughout the competition, winning gold with an overall score of 184.897. Russia won silver with a score of 176.688, and China took home the bronze with a score of 176.003.

Here’s a look at the complete updated medal count heading into Tuesday evening’s swimming events.
