Earlier this week, the NFL held their fall meetings. On Tuesday, owners, players, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, and NFLPA director DeMaurice Smith met to discuss protests during the national anthem.

Those meetings did not result in a rule that would force players to stand during the anthem, but Goodell told reporters that he hoped the league could help combat the societal issues that started the protests in the first place.

“We believe everyone should stand for the national anthem, it’s an important part of our game,” Goodell said at a press conference Tuesday.

With no rule in place to force players to stand, there will be no official league punishment for players that protest. However, many teams may have their own guidelines in place to discourage protests.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters that he would make sure players who “disrespect the flag” won’t play. But other owners, like Jed York of the 49ers, has supported the activist efforts of players on his team.

Some players, including Michael Bennett and Eric Reid, said they will continue to protest. We’ll keep you updated about demonstrations around the NFL with details as they come along.

Despite Jerry Jones’ admonition about players protesting during the anthem, David Irving raised his fist briefly, according to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News. Defensive end Damontre Moore saluted after the anthem was finished.
