After an impressive 34-24 win on Monday night, the Eagles are now 6-1. Carson Wentz was unstoppable — and so were the refs. There was bad news for Philadelphia, however. Left tackle Jason Peters was carted off with a knee injury. Washington falls to 3-3 and its Monday Night Football record since 2000 is now a ghastly 5-20.

Final score: Eagles 34, Washington 24

Eagles 34, Washington 24 Washington cuts into the Eagles lead with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins to Jordan Reed. It’s the pair’s second connection for a score tonight.

Eagles 34, Washington 17 The Eagles extend their lead with a 42-yard field goal from Jake Elliot

Eagles 31, Washington 17 Carson Wentz continues his big night with a nine-play, 74-yard touchdown drive. This play was easily the best of the of the drive and maybe the night.

He ended the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Nelson Agholor.

Third quarter: Eagles 17, Washington 10

Injury: Eagles left tackle Jason Peters was carted off the field early in the third quarter with what looks to be a serious right leg injury. The team announced that we he will not play for the remainder of the game.

Eagles 24, Washington 10 The Eagles extend their lead with a 9-yard td pass from Carson Wentz to Corey Clement.

Eagles 24, Washington 17 Washington cuts into the Eagles lead with a quick touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins to Jordan Reed.

Second quarter: Eagles 17, Washington 10

Eagles 17, Washington 10 In the Eagles’ two-minute drill, Wentz dropped a beautiful dime to Zach Ertz that went for 46 yards. Wentz went to Ertz once again for a 4-yard score, giving the Eagles their first lead of the night.

Washington 10, Eagles 10 Took long enough for the Eagles’ offense to wake up. After being bottled up by Washington most of the night, Wentz finally got a clean pocket and uncorked a 64-yard touchdown bomb to Mack Hollins.

Washington 10, Eagles 3 Davis hit another big play with a 31-yard catch-and-run, as the Eagles’ defense continues giving up chunk yards. Washington got down to the 10-yard line and Chris Thompson scored the game’s first touchdown on an easy swing pass where he was left uncovered.

Washington 3, Eagles 3 The Eagles still couldn’t move the ball much, but a pair of Washington face mask penalties put them into enemy territory. Josh Elliott got the Eagles on the board with a 50-yarder.

First quarter: Washington 3, Eagles 0

Disaster nearly struck for Washington when Jamison Crowder got the ball punched out on a punt return, but his team recovered at their 7-yard line.

The Eagles inexplicably got four straight penalties on their first drive, backing them up to first-and-33 on their own 2-yard line. With pretty much no decent options in the playbook, Carson Wentz heaved up an arm punt that Washington picked off at its 42-yard line.

Eagles fans were not pleased with the flags.

Washington 3, Eagles 0 A big play by Vernon Davis got Washington in business to start the game. The Eagles’ defense stiffened up in the red zone, forcing Washington to settle for a field goal.

Before the game

The Philadelphia Eagles are flying high at 5-1 and hold a commanding lead in the NFC East. They can put a stranglehold on the division when they host Washington Monday night at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN (WatchESPN).

These teams last met in Week 1, when the Eagles walked away with a convincing 30-17 win. Washington is 3-2 and has gotten better since then, but this game could have large implications down the line. Philly completing the regular season sweep would all but eliminate Washington from the division race.

With the 3-3 Dallas Cowboys underachieving and the New York Giants flatlining, the Eagles have stepped up as the team to beat in the division. Their only loss was a Week 2 heartbreaker to the Kansas City Chiefs, and they haven’t looked back since then. Philly’s latest win was a hard-fought 28-23 victory over the Carolina Panthers last Thursday night, where Carson Wentz threw for three touchdowns and the defense picked off Cam Newton three times.

Wentz has taken a big step forward in his second season and is one of the main reasons why the Eagles are in first place. Through six games, he has 13 touchdowns to just three interceptions while averaging 7.7 yards per attempt. The Eagles are averaging 383.2 yards per game, the third-best mark in the league. They’re playing good football and should be taken seriously as a playoff contender.

Washington hasn’t been quite as consistent despite its winning record. It nearly suffered a bad home loss to the San Francisco 49ers last week before escaping with a 26-24 win. The good news is that Kirk Cousins is still playing well, throwing for 1,334 yards and nine touchdowns to two interceptions in his first five games. The running game struggled with Rob Kelley on the shelf, but he’s expected to make his return on Monday night. Washington is not a team that should be taken lightly, and they’ll be eager to make a statement against their division foes here.

Pregame reading

If you’ve looked at the standings, you should. But the wins have also been stacking up so quickly that it’s hard to grasp just how good of a position this team is in right now. It’s almost harder to grasp that, a month ago, there were rumblings — misguided ones, but rumblings nonetheless — that second-year coach Doug Pederson was already an overlooked man as the leader of this franchise.

It’s not like anyone realistically expects the NFL to throw Morelli under the bus or take any drastic measures. But to act like nothing is wrong with that penalty disparity is dumb and, quite frankly, insulting to everyone’s intelligence.

One can argue whether Morelli is truly biased against the Eagles or not. But you can’t deny there’s at least some basis for having the argument.

This is a big blow to a Washington defense that had seen improvement from last year. After the Alabama native unexpectedly fell to No. 17 in the 2017 draft, and earned a spot in the starting lineup, Allen started all five games. He finishes the year with 10 tackles, one sack, and 29 QB hits/pressures.

This week against the Eagles is what makes the second quarter of the season the biggest of the season. Following Philadelphia, there are match-ups against the Dallas Cowboys at home and Seattle Seahawks on the road. Two games that will be bigger than the previous week’s game. Does that mean the season is over if the Redskins finish 1-2 or 0-3? Not at all. However, it does mean that the Redskins will be seeking the help from other teams in the final month of the season. If the Redskins wanted a time period to prove they are a legitimate threat in the NFC, the next three games against formidable opponents gives them that moment.
