The NFL trade deadline usually comes and goes without much fanfare. That wasn’t the case this season, with a flurry of high-profile trades happening as the Tuesday deadline neared.
How are NFL players traded before the deadline doing with their new teams?
Will any of these players make an impact in their debut with their new teams?

The biggest name on the list was Jimmy Garoppolo. The Patriots shipped Tom Brady’s former backup off to the 49ers, where he should earn the starting role with a team that desperately needs some stability at the position.
The Seahawks landed a much-needed upgrade at tackle from the Texans in Duane Brown. The rich got richer when the Eagles pulled off a trade with the Dolphins to bring in Jay Ajayi. And the Panthers shocked everyone by shipping off former first-round pick Kelvin Benjamin to the Bills for a third- and seventh-round pick in 2018.
Some of these players will make their debuts with their new teams right away. Others will have to wait. Here’s the latest on each of the players who landed with new teams via trade this week.
Kelvin Benjamin didn’t play Thursday night, but should next week
It’s not a surprise that the Bills kept Benjamin inactive when they visited the Jets on Thursday Night Football. It had just been two days since the team acquired him. That’s an awfully quick turnaround.
Benjamin is instantly the best receiver on the Bills roster. Sitting out Thursday night gives him 10 full days until the Bills’ next game, which is plenty of time to settle in and learn the offense. He should be able to step in and make a difference right away.
Jimmy Garoppolo was active, but didn’t start
Kyle Shanahan said he’s taking things with Garoppolo “one day at a time” while the quarterback learns the 49ers’ playbook. He dressed for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals, but he was not expected to play. He didn’t.
C.J. Beathard was sacked five times and took 16 hits from the Cardinals in the Niners’ 20-10 loss. Garoppolo may be forced into action sooner than the team would like if the 49ers can’t protect the quarterback better.
Duane Brown got his first start with the Seahawks
Pete Carroll was effusive about Brown after his first day of practice with the Seahawks. And Brown got the start for Seattle this week against Washington.
“I’m counting on an immediate impact,” Carroll said, via the team’s website.
Russell Wilson took two sacks and was hit 11 times in Seattle’s 17-14 loss to Washington that came down to the wire. Brown had a false start in what ended up being a sloppy day for the offensive line, and the team as a whole. The Seahawks finished with 16 penalties for a loss of 138 yards.
Jay Ajayi broke his touchdown drought in his first game with the Eagles
LeGarrette Blount remained the team’s starter, but, as expected, Ajayi certainly got opportunities against the Broncos. Ajayi didn’t have a carry in the first quarter, but came on strong in the second, running for a 45-yard touchdown in just his third touch as an Eagle. He finished the game with eight carries for 77 yards; Blount (nine carries) and Corey Clement (12) each had more.
Marcell Dareus lands in Jacksonville
Dareus joined a stacked Jaguars defense and reunited with Doug Marrone, who was his head coach in Buffalo in 2013 and 2014. He had a positive impact Sunday, recording three solo tackles as part of the team’s defensive line rotation. As a group, the Jacksonville front seven held Cincinnati to 30 rushing yards on 16 carries.
Rashard Robinson lands with the Jets for Thursday Night Football
Robinson didn’t end up getting any snaps with the Jets against the Bills. But he does provide some needed help in the secondary going forward.
