Bills CB Tre’Davious White says ‘it’s a joke’ Rob Gronkowski was suspended just 1 game for hit

“I have a son to raise. People don’t think about that when they react.”

Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White passed through concussion protocol and has been cleared to play in Week 14. But he’s still not happy about the blatant cheap shot from New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski that left him with a head injury in the first place.

After he was cleared Thursday, White spoke to reporters and was asked what he thought about the one-game suspension for Gronkowski:

“Man, it’s a joke,” White said. “I mean, I’m laying there and he snuck me with my back turned. He could’ve broke my neck. I have a son to raise. People don’t think about that when they just react.

“His intentions were to hurt me, but that’s what happens when you ball and they don’t like that.”

White, a first-round rookie for the Bills, caught his third career interception against the Patriots before he was hit in the back of the head by Gronkowski.

Gronkowski received an unnecessary roughness penalty and a one-game suspension for the play, which he appealed and lost. The tight end apologized in the locker room after the game during his talk with reporters.

“Just wanna apologize to Tre’Davious White. I don’t really believe in type of shots like that,” Gronkowski said.

He blamed his frustration that led to the hit on officials not calling defensive holding or pass interference. White said he hasn’t received a personal apology from Gronkowski, though, and he isn’t interested in one, either.

“I don’t want to hear nothing from him,” White said. “His intentions were what he did.”

Part of the criticism of Gronkowski’s suspension is that it mirrors the length of the punishment given to Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster for a block on Monday Night Football that also drew a penalty. The difference is that Smith-Schuster’s happened during the course of an actual play, while Gronkowski’s aimed to injure well after the play.

For that, White has every reason to be angry about the hit.
