Justin Thomas proves golf balls will launch in Mexico City’s thin air

Might we actually see a 500-yard drive at this week’s WGC event in Mexico City?

While heavy hitters like Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson, and Dustin Johnson are unlikely to drive golf balls 500 yards in the thin air at this week’s PGA Tour event in Mexico City, Justin Thomas has proven that a well-struck ProV1x can really soar off the tee.

Thomas, ranked eighth on tour in driving distance with tee shots averaging 308 yards, poked one 355.9 yards ON THE FLY (almost 384 yards total) on Tuesday at Club de Golf Chapultepec’s range, according to this photo he posted of his TrackMan stats:

This week’s WGC-Mexico Championship event marks the first time tour players will take on the golf course, whose dizzying heights of some 7,780 feet above sea level tower over Denver’s “Mile-High” altitude of 5,280. Golf balls really move in such thin air — just ask McIlroy, who blasted 3-woods some 370 yards the week of the 2014 BMW Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club near Denver.

McIlroy, by the way, hit his 8-iron about 210 yards, the world No. 3 reported during a Tuesday press conference. So whether the big boys with their big bats make it to 500 or not, ShotLink will for sure get a workout come Thursday.
