Conor McGregor says Floyd Mayweather fight ‘getting close’ while shouting at boxing media

Conor McGregor told boxing media — repeatedly, while yelling — that a fight with Floyd Mayweather is still coming.

UFC fighter Conor McGregor maintains that he is going to be boxing at some point in the future. At this point, “maintains” may be putting it lightly, as McGregor repeatedly shouted it at the assembled boxing media attending an event at Madison Square Garden in New York.

McGregor was attending the professional debut of Irish Olympic boxer Michael Conlan, and after the bout he addressed rumors about a potential fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

”You’re the boxing guy? I’m the boxing guy. Watch me take over boxing,” McGregor yelled. “Trust me on that. No one in this boxing game knows what’s coming. Trust me on that. When I step in there, I’m going to shock the whole goddamn world. Trust me on that. Look me in the eyes. Twenty-eight years of age, confident as a mother****er, long, rangy, dangerous with every hand. Trust me, I’m going to stop Floyd and you’re all going to eat your words. The whole world is going to eat their words.”

The fight between Mayweather and McGregor has been rumored for years. McGregor is one of the biggest draws in the sport of mixed martial arts and is the only man to ever hold two UFC titles simultaneously. He held the UFC Featherweight championship after winning it from Jose Aldo at UFC 194 in December 2015, and earned the UFC lightweight belt when he beat Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November 2016.

McGregor was asked about a potential date for a fight with Mayweather, a retired boxer who many consider to be the best fighter of this generation.

“We’re getting close, don’t worry about it,” McGregor said. “You’ll hear about it. I’m out of here. I am boxing.”

Mayweather is 49-0 as a professional boxer and said recently that he was officially coming out of retirement to fight McGregor. Of course, McGregor loves to talk and create hype for his matches, and many have assumed that this boxing talk was all just him being his usual colorful self, but it does seem to be getting legs fairly quickly.

Video of the exchange between McGregor and boxing media, namely ESPN’s Dan Rafael, can be found below.
