Charley Hoffman had a four-stroke lead after the first round at the Masters, but veteran Sergio Garcia tied him for first place shortly before 1 p.m. ET on Friday.
2017 Masters leaderboard: Sergio Garcia ties Charley Hoffman for 1st place
Garcia is still hunting his first major championship, and he’s having a great Friday.

Garcia began his second round with three consecutive birdies and moved to minus-4. Hoffman started the day 7-under and got to 8-under at one point, but a series of bogeys evaporated his lead. A Garcia birdie on No. 9 and a Hoffman bogey on No. 10 brought the two men into a tie at 4-under, with more than 36 holes still to play.
Garcia, 37, is the No. 11 player in the World Golf Ranking. He’s one of the three or four best players in the world to never win a major championship, though he’s come close a few times. Garcia has a tantalizing four second-place finishes in majors, dating as far back as the PGA Championship in 1999. He’s been in the hunt so, so many times, but he’s never managed to close the deal. It appears he’ll get another shot this weekend.
William McGirt finished his round at 2-under for the tournament, leaving himself in third place for the moment. Ryan Moore, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Soren Kjeldsen were all at 1-under, leaving themselves in strong condition.
Jordan Spieth begins his day at 3-over, in good shape to stay within a projected 6-over cutline but with a lot of work to do to catch Garcia and Hoffman. Spieth’s Thursday round was mostly solid but marred by a quadruple-bogey on Augusta National’s 15th hole. It was the second tournament round at Augusta in a row during which Spieth carded a quadruple-bogey, and this one was almost as ugly as last year’s.
