Monday’s Say Hey, Baseball looks at the upcoming MLB draft, the shifting AL East standings, and the NCAA super regionals.

The MLB draft is a three-day event, and day one is Monday. MLB Network and MLB.com will be providing the coverage, with the first 75 picks out of far, far more than that made on the first day. While the actual draft will begin at 7 p.m. ET, there is a pre-show at 6 p.m. on MLB Network if you feel the need to be caught up before things begin.
Here’s the selection order for those 75 picks, which will be drafted over two rounds. Well, sort of: There is a mini-round after the first for compensation picks, and another mini-round following round two, so while yes, we’re getting through just the first two rounds on Monday, the reason we’re looking at 75 picks instead of 60 (two for each team) is because of the compensation rounds and how draft-pick compensation works.
Oh, and also the Cardinals hacking the Astros. That got Houston a couple more picks, and they’ll make four total this evening.
Usually we could tell you who is going to go first overall, but this is one of those drafts where it’s a little unclear even if basically everyone is in agreement on who the top talent is. Hey, with preferences on player types (Hunter Greene is a high school pitcher, and maybe the Twins don’t want a high school pitcher) and the occasional desire for the top team in the draft to value going under slot over picking the top talent, these things can happen.
- Noah Syndergaard loves hot sauce. Like, a lot. And Charlotte Wilder talked to him about that, as well as stranded-on-an-island scenarios involving cows, and whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich.
- Aaron Judge is a whole lot of baseball boy, and with that comes some huge homers. Like, say, this 495-foot blast that is the longest anyone has hit in MLB this season.
- Judge, by the way, was once a highly touted tight end recruit. It seems like he made the right choice.
- MLB Daily Dish put together a list of all the things you need to know before the draft, so if you want to pretend like you’ve known all this stuff all along, there you go.
- Rain delays interrupted the NCAA super regionals on Sunday, but Cal State Fullerton managed to advance to the College World Series.
- The Orioles got crushed by the Yankees again, and now find themselves in fourth place in the AL East, one game over .500 and 6.5 games back. Remember: They were in first place for 35 days already this year, and even two games up.
- Not surprisingly, we’re back to getting rumors of a rift between Buck Showalter and Dan Duquette thanks to all this losing.
- The Yankees, meanwhile, are four games up on the wild card-leading Red Sox in the East, and Greg Bird just got back.
- The rebuilding Braves are one of those teams looking for under slot picks in this year’s draft.
