Phil Jackson reportedly fell in and out of sleep during a lottery pick’s workout

The Knicks are picking eighth overall in their most critical summer of the century.

As president of the New York Knicks, Phil Jackson is in charge of making most personnel decisions. Rule No. 1 when scouting potential draft prospects is most undoubtedly this: Keep your eyes open.

Jackson, according to ESPN’s Jay Williams, broke that rule when he fell “in and out of sleep” during a lottery pick’s workout.

“A top-15 draft pick told me the other day — because we were involved in this conversation about Phil Jackson and the Knicks — he said Phil Jackson was falling in and out of sleep during my workout,” Williams said on ESPN’s Outside the Lines before clarifying: “Yes. ‘Falling in and out of sleep at my workout.’ This is what this guy told me.”

Thursday’s draft is arguably the most important in recent history. It is projected to have one of the deepest talent pools since the 2003 draft that produced LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Carmelo Anthony.

The Knicks are picking at No. 8, and could potentially trade Kristaps Porzingis for another top-four pick and an established starter. However this mess plays out in New York, one thing’s certain: Drafting the right players this summer is critical for this franchise moving forward.

And if Jackson can’t keep his eyes open during a prospect’s workout, the Knicks could be doomed long before they’re on the clock.
