Floyd Mayweather retires: McGregor ‘was my last fight, for sure’

Mayweather says he won’t fight again. He’s 50-0.

Floyd Mayweather beat Conor McGregor in the 10th round of their fight on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Referee Robert Byrd stopped the fight as Mayweather pummeled a clearly fatigued McGregor. In an interview after the bout ended, Showtime’s Jim Gray asked Mayweather if he’d ever fight again, now that he’s 50-0 as a professional.

“Tonight was my last fight, for sure,” Mayweather said. He lauded McGregor as an opponent and said unequivocally that he wouldn’t return to the ring. There are good reasons for Mayweather to be done, though it’s not certain that he’ll stay away.

He’s already retired twice, after beating Ricky Hatton in 2007 and Manny Pacquiao in 2015. To whatever extent this is official, he’s now retired for a third time.

McGregor, for his part, didn’t answer definitively when asked whether he’d box again. He’s a mixed martial artist by trade, and his bout with Mayweather was his first as a professional boxer. There’s a nonzero chance that we never see either man box again, though there’s also a chance we do. That uncertainty is just how they likely prefer it.
