The championship is upon us as Texas and Japan square off.

For 12-year-olds, that is.
While Major League teams jockey for playoff position, the next generation of baseball stars will have their eyes fixed on Williamsport, Penn., as the last teams standing vie for short-field supremacy. The American team from Lufkin, Texas will have the opportunity to keep the trophy in the United States if they can hold off a challenge from a spirited squad of Japanese all-stars.
Japanese teams have won the title in four of the last six years, and only a New York victory in 2016 prevented five straight seasons of Asian dominance on the diamond. Maine-Endwell’s mantle has been taken up by Lufkin, whose only blemish in the tournament was a walk-off defeat to U.S. runners-up North Carolina. In five games, they’ve outscored their opponent by an aggregate 32-14 score.
Japan has been even more dominant. The Tokyo-based team has yet to trail in Williamsport, skunking foes to cruise through the international side of the bracket. Only one team — South Korea — has mustered even a single run against the team’s dominant pitching.
That’ll give Texas a difficult puzzle to solve Sunday — but one they’ll have to figure out in order to ensure an American champion for the second straight seasons.
