What game is Tony Romo calling in Week 3?

Romo’s new broadcasting career has been a huge success so far.

CBS

Tony Romo’s broadcasting career has gotten off to a great start. He’s provided wonderful insight and sharp predictions, and on Sunday, he’ll be bringing those to the Bengals vs. Packers game on CBS.

Why is this a good game for him to call?

While this might not be the most intriguing matchup of the weekend, there are some things we could learn from Romo in the game.

The Bengals haven’t had a good start to their season. Through two games, they have yet to score a touchdown and have been a drag to watch, particularly on offense. But we could see new wrinkles in Bill Lazor’s first game as offensive coordinator. Lazor is taking over for Ken Zampese, who was fired following the Bengals’ 13-9 loss against the Texans in Week 2.

On the other side, Aaron Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks the NFL, but he hasn’t been as sharp as usual so far this season. He’s thrown just three touchdowns and has turned the ball over three times — that includes two interceptions for a quarterback who threw just seven all last year. That’s not exactly cause for concern when it comes to Rodgers, but it is worth noting that he has never beaten the Bengals in his career.

Yes, the Packers will probably win this time, but it’s possible that this game is more competitive than expected.

So what are some things Romo might talk about then?

Some insight on Andy Dalton and the offense would be great, and will likely be a common talking point for Romo. Through two games, Dalton has completed 54.5 percent of his passes for 394 yards and has already thrown four picks.

Romo could diagnose what’s been wrong with Dalton this season, and if the Bengals quarterback is able to rebound under Lazor, what tweaks the new offensive coordinator made.

Of course, there’s also Rodgers, the free play king. Romo can point out the things in his game that we may not have noticed, or explain how and why Rodgers makes his decisions.

Romo knows it’s not just about the quarterback, though. It’s who can get after the quarterback. Defensive tackle Geno Atkins has been one of the only bright spots for the Bengals so far this year. He has three sacks and has pressured quarterbacks on 24.3 percent of his pass rushes, according to Pro Football Focus.

It’s worth watching — or listening to Romo, as the case may be — to see if Atkins can get after Rodgers, and how it affects the quarterback.

Why does it matter if Tony Romo is calling a game?

In Week 1, Romo called the Raiders vs. Titans game in Nashville. He quickly became one of the biggest headlines around the league in the opening weekend, calling shots during the broadcast like it was nothing.

Here’s a greatest hits reel from Week 1:

In Week 2, he called the Patriots-Saints game in New Orleans. He was still predicting plays, but his most compelling piece of analysis was about Bill Belichick and his decision-making.

The Patriots put five guys on the line ready to rush the passer, and while they usually drop two of them back into coverage, they rushed all five.

Romo’s explanation is everything:

It’s a small sample, but we should expect to see much of the same from Romo in Week 3. He’s become a must-watch broadcaster for the football fan interested in the X’s and O’s of the game.
