The reigning horse of the year is the headliner of the second running of the richest horse race in the world. The 2018 Pegasus World Cup is all set for Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. (4:30 p.m. ET, NBC), with 11 other horses trying to knock off Gun Runner.

Gun Runner was named American Horse of the Year at the Eclipse Awards on Thursday, after a season that saw the 5-year-old capture four Grade 1 victories, including the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Saturday’s Pegasus Cup will be the horse’s final race.

“He stepped up when called upon and just met the challenge and, you know, how do you say, got it done,” trainer Steve Asmussen told the AP. “He’s truly a special horse mentally and physically. And we’ve, you know, been on a tremendous run with him.”

Competition will look similar to the Breeders’ Cup Classic, with Collected, West Coast, War Story and Gunnevera all in Florida, giving the Pegasus World Cup five of the top six finishers from the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Gun Runner drew the No. 10 post on Saturday.

Gun Runner is the heavy favorite on Saturday at 4-5 odds as of Wednesday, per the Louisville Courier-Journal. Sharp Azteca came in at 6-1. West Coast and Collected, both trained by Bob Baffert, were next with 8-1 odds each.

The total purse for the Pegasus World Cup is $16 million, up from $12 million last year, with a whopping $7 million going to the winner.

Laffit Pincay III will host NBC’s coverage on Saturday alongside analysts Jerry Bailey and Randy Moss. That trio will be joined on the broadcast by reporters Nick Luck and Britney Eurton.
