Broncos quarterback Chad Kelly was arrested for trespassing on Tuesday morning after a couple allegedly found the quarterback sitting on their sofa at 1 a.m. “mumbling incoherently” to himself. Police said they did not find any alcohol in his system.

A day later, the Broncos cut ties with Kelly, announcing Wednesday that they waived the quarterback.

“This was a decision that we made as an organization,” Broncos general manager John Elway said. “After reviewing all the information and in talking with Vance (Joseph) and Joe (Ellis), we agreed that releasing Chad was the right thing to do.

”Even though Chad’s no longer part of our team, we’ve offered to help him however we can and are supportive of him in every possible way.”

Kelly, 24, was reportedly chased out of the home by a man wielding the tube of a vacuum cleaner before police found him in the area in a black sports utility vehicle shortly after and placed him under arrest. Kelly was attending a Broncos Halloween party on Monday night before stumbling into the home, with a report by the Associated Press indicating Kelly sat on the sofa next to a mother who was awake with her young child.

Another report said Kelly was escorted out of the Halloween party earlier in the night after physical altercations with at least two people:

Elway spoke about the incident on a local radio broadcast Tuesday morning.

A press release from Englewood police outlined the incident:

On October 23, 2018 at approximately 1:17 a.m., Englewood Police Officers responded to an address in the 3200 block of South Lincoln Street, reference a male standing outside a residence. While officers were responding, they received information that the male was now inside the residence.

The male was chased out of the residence by an occupant, and officers began to search the area. A short time later, a male matching the description provided by the homeowner, was located inside a black sport utility vehicle, in the area of the Gothic Theatre.

The male, who was identified as Chad Kelly 03/26/94, was placed into custody without incident. As a result of the investigation, Kelly was jailed on the charge of 1st Degree Criminal Trespass, and transported to the Arapahoe County Jail.

Kelly, the nephew of Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, has a history of misadventure from his time in college. In 2014 the then-Clemson quarterback was kicked off for conduct detrimental to the team, then later in the year he was arrested for his role in a nightclub brawl, then in 2016 he ran on the field during a high school football game to stick up for his brother following a late-hit.

Kelly was the very last pick of the 2017 draft and won the job as Broncos backup quarterback in preseason, beating out former first-round pick Paxton Lynch for the role. Now, with both quarterbacks gone, former Browns quarterback Kevin Hogan is the backup for Case Keenum in Denver.
