Good morning, friends who also watch the Olympics.
Olympics cheat sheet: Team USA women just won a bunch of medals
Here’s what you missed last night in Pyeongchang and what you should watch out for on Wednesday.

And what a morning it has been at the 2018 Winter Olympics for the women of Team USA.
But, before we celebrate those accomplishments, let’s first say goodbye to the U.S. men’s hockey team. It feels like we were still just getting to know you. Alas, the tournament can be as cold as the ice, especially when you don’t have any NHL players with you. You’re heading home after a 3-2 shootout loss to the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals.
On the other hand ...
HELLO U.S. WOMEN’S HOCKEY TEAM! You’re getting ready for the gold-medal showdown with rival Canada.
With that matchup approaching quickly, let’s look back at a busy evening and early morning in Pyeongchang for Team USA.
We’ve got some U.S. medals to talk about
- U.S. alpine skier Lindsey Vonn took home bronze in the women’s downhill final. The 33-year-old became the oldest woman to medal in downhill at the Olympics.
- Kikkan Randall and Jessie Diggins won the first U.S. medal in women’s cross country skiing — and it was gold.
- U.S. sledders Elana Meyers Taylor and Lauren Gibbs won silver in the two-woman bobsled. Meyers Taylor is the only female bobsledder in Winter Olympics history to medal three times, according to USA Today.
- The U.S. women’s speed skating squad ended a medal drought and made some history, winning their first Olympic medal since 2002 and a first-ever medal in team pursuit.
Who is leading the medal count?
Oh, Norway. We get it. You’re so good with skis and skates. Yes, Germany, we see you and your gold medals. Don’t worry. But, hey, the United States has jumped back into the top five in overall medal count thanks to this flurry of strong finishes.
Who are our new favorites?
- Lindsey Vonn got emotional talking about her late grandfather after what was likely her last Olympics downhill.
- Mirai Nagasu, who we last saw landing a historic triple axel in the figure skating team event, had a rough start to her short program. But she persevered.
- Making history is exhausting. Just ask Jesse and Kikkan.
- France’s Mae Berenice Maite proved that Beyonce songs are actually great for figure skating.
- Listen to U.S. freestyle skier and freshly minted bronze medalist Brita Sigourney rattle off all her surgeries.
What are we watching next?
