If you’re into unfiltered dad jokes, I highly recommend you check out Mychal Thompson’s Twitter feed. The former NBA champion is the father of Golden State Warriors three-sinker Klay Thompson, Dodgers outfielder Trayce Thompson, and D-league basketball player Mychel (with an E, not an A) Thompson. What a sports family! Guess it’s true what they say about the ol’ apple, eh? It sure doesn’t fall far! *[gets run over by a lame bus]*
We don’t deserve Mychal Thompson live-tweeting March Madness
But I’m so glad we have it.

It’s worth checking out Mychal’s Twitter feed, because he’s been winning March Madness as he live-tweets games from his handle @champagnennuts. It started Thursday with Oklahoma-Rhode Island. Check out these beautiful puns:
It’s not the first time Thompson has tweeted about OU’s Trae Young, either. Back in January, he was letting everyone know how he’d fix the current state of NCAA basketball:
He continued his March Madness coverage through the weekend, most notably with this great pun about Michigan’s Jordan Poole:
In the interest of full disclosure, I should tell you that I’ve been obsessed with Mychal’s Twitter for months now. A friend of mine randomly texted me one of his tweets back in December, and I’ve been hooked ever since. This is the best thing on the internet. I check in at least twice a week to see what he’s been up to, and I’ve never been disappointed, because as a broadcaster for the Lakers, he’s always got something to say.
Here’s what he let fly when J.R. Smith was suspended for throwing a bowl of soup at a coach:
Mychal blessedly doesn’t limit himself to the NBA. No, this man does not stick to sports, my friends. He has the most pure, authentic thoughts; so beautifully straightforward that they twist themselves into poetry to transcend their character-limited boxes. If you ever want to turn around a bad day, just check out these amazing missives from his brain.
From what he’s listening to ...
... to the kind of rock star he’d be ...
... to important questions about spelling ...
... to thoughts about his car ...
... to good, old-fashioned dad jokes:
I could go on, but I’m just going to let you peruse these tweets yourself to find your favorite (there’s a great one about guacamole buried somewhere back in December).
It’s also worth noting that Mychal’s tweets put his son into some context. Remember when Klay stared at a toaster for a while? And is the most meme-able athlete? And regularly shows up to fancy basketball games wearing polo shirts, while his teammates rock bespoke suits and cool jeans? I just feel like the spirit of the father has really been transferred to the son, and there’s something wonderful about that.
I’ve refrained from writing about Mychal’s Twitter feed before now because it’s been a little secret source of joy for me, but I don’t want to keep that from anyone else for any longer. I especially don’t want you to miss out his live-tweets of March Madness, because the only thing that can make the best three weeks of the year better is this kind of commentary. I hope he keeps going throughout the tournament, but even if he doesn’t, you should all go follow him anyway. Tell him I sent you. He’ll know what it means.
