Doug Pederson noncommittal on Carson Wentz starting for Eagles in Week 1

Carson Wentz took the field for his first 11-on-11 drills since suffering a torn ACL and MCL in December 2017. We discuss his return and more in Friday’s Rise ‘n Grind.

Carson Wentz is back in action in Philadelphia as the Eagles took the field for their first training camp practice of the year. Many thought Wentz would begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, but he did not and was running, throwing and showing no signs of being slowed down when he hit the field. You likely remember Wentz tore his ACL and LCL in a Week 14 win over the Rams. That forced Nick Foles into action for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs. The Eagles ultimately went on to win the Super Bowl with Foles at quarterback.

Now, Wentz is back on the field and ready to take back his job as the Eagles’ starting quarterback, which is kind of awkward for Foles.

SB Nation’s Eagles blog, Bleeding Green Nation was on the scene for day one of camp, which you can watch some of here. It was Wentz’s first time doing 11-on-11 drills since his injury and though he isn’t cleared for contact, that should happen soon enough.

”I’m not going to push him or get him out there sooner than he has to,” Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said after practice. “I want to make sure that he’s 100 percent. He looked good today, and we’re just going to continue to progress.”

It seems Wentz is on pace to start in Week 1 when the Eagles take on the Falcons on Thursday, September 9 to open the NFL season. Though, Pederson wouldn’t commit to that just yet.

”I’m going to let things unfold and I’m going to trust the medical staff. I’m going to listen to Carson,” Pederson said. “I’m going to see how we do in practice, and we’ll make a decision (on who starts in Week 1) when we get to that point.”
