Somebody’s figured out a niche: after Louisiana-Lafayette set a New Orleans Bowl attendance record in 2011 (42,841), they’re back again this year. They’ll take on Conference USA’s East Carolina, which went 8-4.
2012 New Orleans Bowl, ECU vs. UL Lafayette: Teams, TV schedule, location and more
The Ragin Cajuns will make their second straight New Orleans Bowl, this time against East Carolina.

The New Orleans Bowl, founded in 2001, was among the pioneers of ending the tradition of cool names like Liberty Bowl and Sugar Bowl and of just naming bowls after the cities in which they take place. Want a personality? Tough. This is a football game. It takes place in New Orleans. IT IS THE NEW ORLEANS BOWL, AND SHUT UP.
It also has been almost exclusively high-scoring. The winner has never scored fewer than 24 points. Every winner has at least cracked 30 since 2004. Everybody scores in New Orleans, as long as you stay out late enough.
TV schedule: Saturday, Dec. 22, Noon, ESPN
Locale: Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, La., Capacity, 73,208
My thoughts on the title sponsor’s services: The New Orleans Bowl is sponsored by R+L Carriers. A cursory Internet search, using AltaVista AskJeeves BingLOL Google, reveals that R+L Carriers is a freight-shipping company. Because if there’s any market a freight-shipping company wants to tap, it’s Americans watching mid-level bowl games. Because that’s what I watch to discover new ways to solve all my freight-shipping issues, of which I have several.
Last year’s score: University of Louisiana-Lafayette 32, San Diego State 30
