Luuk de Jong injury: Borussia Mönchengladbach forward will miss six weeks after knee surgery

Borussia Mönchengladbach forward Luuk de Jong will miss the next six weeks after having surgery on his knee.

Alex Grimm

Borussia Mönchengladbach forward Luuk de Jong has had surgery on his left knee, the club has announced. The surgery was arthroscopic in nature to the capsular ligament. He is expected to miss six weeks.

De Jong, 22, was injured during Thursday’s Europa League match with Marseille. He was substituted in the 65th minute after a collision with Joey Barton. Gladbach was winning 1-0 at the time and would go on to win the match.

After making a big money transfer this summer, De Jong has failed to really find his footing so far this season. He’s only managed three goals in all competitions, and he even scored an own goal in their Champions League qualifier. Gladbach made him their most expensive signing ever when they bought him from FC Twente. The rumored price of the transfer was €15 million. Considering they only received €17.5 million for Marco Reus, they must be expecting more from the young forward.

With De Jong out of action, I expect will see Lucien Favre turn back to giving Mike Hanke and Igor De Camargo more opportunities up top. Gladbach are still trying to find some of the form they had last season, but a big win on Sunday saw them leap into the top half of the table.
