Mainz vs. Fortuna Düsseldorf: Final score 1, Düsseldorf lose for first time this season

Andreas Ivanschitz scores to give Fortuna Düsseldorf their first loss of the season.

Fortuna Düsseldorf gave up a goal in the 85th minute to lose their second straight match, this time a 1-0 loss to Mainz.

Before last weekend against Schalke, Düsseldorf had yet to concede a goal this season. They managed to fight back from two down to earn a draw against Schalke, but they weren’t as lucky this time.

Mainz were the better side throughout the match and came close a few times. Nicolai Müller had the first opportunity in the contest, but his early header went wide.

Andreas Ivanschitz gave Mainz the advantage in the 78th minute by drawing the second yellow card on Düsseldorf’s Oliver Fink. The visitors brought on defender Juanan for Dani Schahin in an attempt to batten down the hatches for the remaining 12 minutes.

The hosts ended Düsseldorf’s run at perfection when Nikolce Noveski headed Ivanschitz’s corner past Fabian Giefer. The goal snaps a 355 minute goalless streak on the road for Düsseldorf and gives them their first loss of the season.
