Wolfsburg vs. Mainz: Final score 0-2, Junior Diaz scores first Bundesliga goal

Mainz traveled to the Volkswagen Arena and left with all three points as they beat Wolfsburg 2-0. The win jumps them all the way to 11th in the table, while Wolfsburg drops into the relegation zone.

Wolfsburg looked good early in the match and nearly went ahead after only six minutes, but Ivica Olic’s header went just over the crossbar. Vieirinha was instrumental in creating chances early for the hosts, and it seemed like it was just a matter of time before they took a lead.

Mainz shocked everyone and jumped out in front in the 26th minute thanks to the head of Junior Diaz. Andreas Ivanschitz sent in a cross, and Diaz got his head on it to see the ball just out of the reach of a diving Diego Benaglio.

Felix Magath’s side was stunned. After several chances to go ahead, they now found themselves down 1-0. Things got worse for Wolfsburg just ten minutes later. Ivanschitz sent in another cross, and Adam Szalai turned it past Benaglio to make it 2-0.

Wolfsburg absolutely dominated the second half of the match shooting seemingly at will while not allowing a single shot from Mainz. However, it was not meant to be for Wolfsburg, and they were unable to beat Christian Wetklo. The result gives Mainz their first victory on the road this season, while Wolfsburg remain without a win at home.
