A pair of upsets highlighted Wednesday’s college basketball schedule, with No. 10 Connecticut falling to Stanford 53-51, and No. 14 North Carolina dropping a home game 86-83 to Texas.

    In an embarrassment worthy of the non-conference season, San Diego State wiped the floor with Southern Utah, 76-39. The Aztecs held the Thunderbirds to 11 first-half points, entering the break up 30. Four San Diego State players scored in double digits against one of the least impressive Division I teams.

    San Diego State will have some challenges early in 2014, with visits to Colorado State and Kansas before Mountain West play begins.

    Napier is one of the elite players in college basketball, but it was Randle’s night to be the best player on the floor. The junior sank 50 percent of his shots and chipped in five rebounds to go with his impressive scoring total. John Huestis added 13 points and 10 rebounds for Stanford.

    Streaky Tar Heels fall in Chapel Hill

    It was North Carolina’s third loss of the year, though the Tar Heels have also beaten Michigan State and Louisville.

    Of course the Tar Heels were not done. A three from Marcus Paige made it a one-point game with 13 seconds left, and North Carolina quickly fouled. But the failure to box out allowed DeMarcus Holland to score off his own missed free throw.

    And the hot shooting didn’t stop there. The Minutemen shot 60.4 percent for the game with a crisp 9-14 mark from three. Carter led the perimeter attack, making all three of his attempts.
