No. 8 Wisconsin went on the road and remained unbeaten with a brutal 48-38 win on Wednesday over Virginia in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
Wisconsin vs. Virginia final score: Cavaliers stifled in first loss
The Badgers held Virginia to just 38 points on 22 percent shooting from the field.
The game was not pretty by any stretch, but Wisconsin’s tough defense was enough to lift the Big Ten to another victory. The Cavaliers shot just 22 percent from the field, including a 1-11 performance from three.
Not that the Badgers were a whole lot better. They shot just 29 percent for the game, though they were led by Josh Gasser, whose 11 points made him the night's only double-figure scorer.
A game-high 12 rebounds from Frank Kaminsky helped make up for the Badgers' poor shooting, but still Wisconsin was not able to put the Cavaliers away until the end. Wisconsin held Virginia without a field goal for the first nine minutes of the second half, but in that time, the Badgers only increased their lead to 13 points, after leading 25-20 at intermission.
A quick Virginia run brought its deficit down to seven, but Wisconsin responded with five straight points of its own. A few minutes later, the Cavaliers clawed back again. A pair of free throws from Anthony Gill made it 44-38 with 1:40 to play, forcing the Badgers to make their shots from the line.
London Perrantes had eight points on 2-5 shooting to lead Virginia.
