Arizona vs. Stanford: Wildcats remain undefeated, squeak by Stanford, 60-57

The nation’s No. 1 team got a strong defensive effort in the second half to hold off the Cardinal.

Arizona barely escaped Stanford with its perfect record intact, holding off the Cardinal, 60-57.

With time dwindling and Stanford looking to tie, Arizona coach Sean Miller decided to foul Stanford before a shot could be attempted. Chasson Randle made both free throws, but Nick Johnson returned fire with two of his own to re-establish the three-point lead. A Stanford heave just missed at the buzzer, securing a 21-0 start for Arizona.

Johnson was the driving force for Arizona, scoring 16 points. The Wildcats’ leading scorer also sank the game-deciding three-pointer in the final minute, his third on the day.

Stanford was able to keep Arizona away from the offensive glass, holding the Wildcats to just six offensive rebounds. Arizona entered the game averaging over 13 offensive boards per game.

Four Cardinal players scored in double digits, led by Dwight Powell and Josh Huestis with 13.

Arizona will continue its run in Northern California, visiting California on Saturday.
