Texas coach explains Oklahoma rivalry and gun laws and stuff

Ahead of Saturday’s Red River Shootout, Longhorns defensive coordinator Vance Bedford shares his thoughts on meeting the Sooners.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Red River Shootout is this weekend, and Texas defensive coordinator Vance Bedford sure sounds ready. The Lone Star State native and former Longhorns defensive back, who’s in his first year back in Austin:

That’s some fiery dialogue from a coach making his only weekly media appearance, now that Saturday postgames are ruled out.

Texas’ D has been solid so far, ranking 29th in total defense (333.6 yards allowed per game) and 21st in scoring defense (19.2 points allowed per game). The Longhorns limited Art Briles’ Baylor offense to 389 yards last weekend, but still fell, 28-7.

That’s probably much of the fuel behind Bedford’s comments, but nobody needs a reminder about what’s at stake this weekend: The Longhorns are going for their second straight Red River win after dropping the previous three. Last season, a strong running game propelled Texas to a 36-20 win at the Cotton Bowl.
