No. 25 Texas provided the latest twist in what’s been a wild season in the Big 12 with a convincing 81-69 win over No. 6 Kansas in Austin on Saturday.
College basketball scores: Texas knocks off Kansas for 6th straight win
The Longhorns left little room for doubt on Saturday, cruising at home over the No. 6 team in the country.
The Longhorns built a double-digit lead late in the first half and never gave it up, ballooning the lead to 20 early in the second half.
The battle inside was key for Texas, which out-rebounded the Jayhawks 44-37 and tallied 12 blocks, four coming from Cameron Ridley. Ridley also scored nine points and pulled down 10 boards.
Though potential No. 1 pick Joel Embiid nearly had a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds, he was held under 10 points for the first time in seven games, and shot less than 50 percent from the field for the first time since Nov. 12.
Wayne Selden led the Jayhawks with 21 points in Kansas’s first Big 12 loss.
Hoyas upset Michigan State at MSG
Georgetown ended a five-game losing streak on Saturday with a 64-60 upset over No. 7 Michigan State as part of Madison Square Garden's pre-Super Bowl triple header.
Markel Starks scored 16 points to lead the Hoyas. But on the opposing side, Michigan State was short-handed, playing without Adreian Payne and Branden Dawson. Gary Harris picked up the slack for the Spartans, scoring a game-high 20 points.
Georgetown trailed by one at halftime but took the lead 18 seconds into the second half on a three from Cameron Ridley and never gave it up. In an ugly game, the Hoyas held on behind 18-of-24 shooting from the line. The game saw 31 total turnovers and the two teams combined to shoot 11-of-41 from three.
Niang’s 27 leads Iowa State past Oklahoma
Georges Niang’s career day was the difference as No. 16 Iowa State topped No. 23 Oklahoma, 81-75. Niang’s 27 points came on 10-of-16 shooting to help the Cyclones to their second win over a ranked team in a week.
The Cyclones had been in a downward spiral before this one, dropping four out of five games. But Iowa State kept the Sooners at bay in the second half. The Cyclones built a 10-point lead and answered a run that cut it back to a point with 2:48 to go with a quick 7-2 spurt capped by a three from Niang.
Buddy Hield poured on 30 points in the loss for Oklahoma. He shot 10-of-18, including 5-of-8 from three. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Sooners that was highlighted by wins at Baylor and at home over Oklahoma State.
