Doug McDermott scores 39 in win over Villanova, passes Larry Bird on scoring list

McDermott has just about wrapped up the National Player of the Year award after another phenomenal performance against Villanova.

It was the Doug McDermott show once again on Sunday night as No. 18 Creighton knocked off No. 6 Villanova in blowout fashion, 101-80.

McDermott’s 39-point effort moved him into 13th place on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list, putting him ahead of Larry Bird. Of course Bird did it in just three college seasons, but still -- passing Larry Bird in anything is pretty remarkable.

Here was the three-pointer that moved him ahead of Bird.

Perhaps McDermott’s best play of the game came on this slick up-and-under move, which gave him 29 points at the time.

McDermott shot 13-of-17 from the field and also brought down seven rebounds. Next up for McDermott in the record books is Tyler Hansbrough, and he should be able to pass him in Creighton's next game at Marquette on Wednesday night.

As McDermott torched the Wildcats, Twitter provided some insight on his career, his performance on Sunday and more.

Not too bad for a guy who is paying for college this season as a walk-on.
