Andrew Jones, the Texas basketball player battling Leukemia, has been released from a Houston area hospital, the program has announced. Jones is now receiving treatment as an outpatient.

Jones was diagnosed with Leukemia in early January. He has spent the last month at MD Anderson Medical Center in Houston. Texas released the following statement from Jones.

“I was released from MD Anderson Cancer Center on Saturday night (Feb. 24) around 5 p.m. and have started receiving treatments on an outpatient basis,” Jones said. “That was a great night and a big step for me and my family.

“My doctors tell me I am continuing to show improvement, and that is really encouraging.

“My family and I will remain in Houston for this next stage of my recovery. As we’ve said before, I’m really thankful for all the love and support that has been shown to me and to my family. It has truly been overwhelming. I hope you’ll continue to keep me in your daily thoughts and prayers. Together, we WILL win this fight.”

Jones was a McDonald’s All-American out of high school who tested the NBA draft waters after his freshman season. Now a sophomore, Jones averaged 13.5 points per game before he fractured his right wrist weeks before his diagnosis was announced.

The Big 12 has showed mass support for Jones throughout his treatment. Opposing teams have donned warmup shirts honoring Jones before games against Texas. The hashtag #AJ1 has also prevalent as a way to show support for Jones throughout the season.
