LET’S DO THIS!
The Sweet 16 tips off with a game nobody could have seen coming between No. 11 Loyola-Chicago and No. 7 Nevada. The Wolf Pack fought back from a 22-point deficit last week to knock off the last remaining top-four team in the South Region, No. 2 Cincinnati. They only finished off the bracket destruction the Ramblers caused earlier by knocking off No. 3 Tennessee with a game-winning shot before the buzzer.
Can Loyola-Chicago keep it going, or was Sister Jean right to have her team out in the second week of the tournament?
Thirty minutes after the opening 7:07 p.m. ET tip, No. 3 Michigan and No. 7 Texas A&M will play for the right to take on the winner of No. 4 Gonzaga/No. 9 Florida State. The Wolverines beat No. 6 Houston on a buzzer-beating three-point shot from Jordan Poole — no, not Jordan Peele — following two missed free throws by the Cougars. It’s a miracle they escaped that game. As a reward, they face maybe their biggest challenge yet in the Aggies.
Texas A&M beat Providence in the opening round of the tournament by four points, then unexpectedly steamrolled past No. 2 UNC by 21. Four of the five Aggies starters scored in double figures, with the fifth, Robert Williams, scoring eight points with 13 rebounds. Pure domination.
The third game tips at 9:37 p.m. ET between No. 9 Kansas State and No. 5 Kentucky, the new favorite to emerge from the depleted South Region. The Kansas State Wildcats had a competitive opening-round game against Creighton, and pulled out another close one against No. 16-seed UMBC. They haven’t had to play a team with the size, length, or skill of Kentucky yet.
Can John Calipari’s Kentucky Wildcats make another surprise run in what was supposed to be a down year?
The final game of the night tips off 20 minutes later, and pits No. 9 Florida State against No. 4 Gonzaga, college basketball’s powerhouse underdog. The Seminoles knocked off Mizzou (with Michael Porter Jr.) in the first round, then upset No. 1 Xavier like nobody expected. They’re in for an even tougher matchup against the Bulldogs though, who are much tougher than their No. 4 seed suggests. KenPom ranks Gonzaga as the No. 7 team in the country, with just four losses — three came within one possession or in overtime. The Bulldog don’t go down easy.
