Derrick Green commits Saturday: Does Tennessee or Auburn have a shot over Michigan?

The nation’s best high school running back is set to announce his college choice. Can Tennessee or Auburn pull the shocker and beat out Michigan?

Running back recruit Derrick Green will make his college choice on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. Green is a consensus five-star recruit, and arguably the top high school running back in the country.

Green has narrowed his college choices to Tennessee, Michigan and Auburn.

But is this a one-horse race in Michigan?

Michigan is thought to be in very good shape to land Green. The Wolverines have done a good job selling his parents on football and the school’s academics. And Green fits the traditional mold of the Michigan back. Powerfully built with a game to match, Green runs with tremendous balance and patience. More importantly, he knows that he is 6’0, 220 pounds and doesn’t dance much in the hole.

Tennessee and Auburn also have a great history with big backs like Jamal Lewis and Stephen Davis, and the uncertainty that comes with new coaching staffs at both schools makes this race a little more difficult to call than normal. Just how good at recruiting are Tennessee’s Butch Jones and Auburn’s Gus Malzahn? They’re thought to be good, but nobody really knows just how good they can be with a name like Tennessee or Auburn on their shirt.

All three schools have made the all-important in-home visits, and this one might come down to the wire.

Green finished his senior season at Hermitage (Va.) High School with 1,285 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns. He put up these numbers despite sitting out a total of 17 quarters because his team often had large leads. He ran for 1,500 as a junior in 2011.
