Carl Lawson signs with Auburn: Ratings, video and more

One of the rising stars of the 2013 class has officially sent in his letter of intent. Follow @SBNationCFB Follow @SBNRecruiting

Defensive end Carl Lawson, out of Milton High School in Georgia, has signed his letter of intent to play for Auburn. The highly-rated prospect first committed to Auburn back in March of 2012, but re-opened his recruitment and had been taking visits all the way up until signing day. Eventually, he stuck the Tigers despite their coaching change.

Lawson isn’t a typical blue-chip recruit, in that schools haven’t been drooling over him since the moment he stepped on a football field. He held no FBS scholarship offers after his junior season, which was his first on the Varsity squad. He played well enough to get an invite to a Georgia All-Star game, and that is where his recruitment ramped up.

Since then, Lawson has been sought after by the top programs. His status as a late-bloomer hints at his strong work ethic and high effort.

The five-star prospect isn’t just about effort and hard work, he also has plenty of natural athletic ability. He isn’t a burner at defensive end, with his 40 measured anywhere between 4.7 and 5.1, but he has the strength to overpower offensive lineman. Lawson still needs plenty of technical work, but with solid coaching he could become a force in the run game and the pass game.

Lawson has an amazing first step, and plays low with excellent natural power. He is not the longest defensive end, but has clearly demonstrated the ability to overcome his lack of height during his high school career and at various all-star events. He also has some attitude issues that will have to be ironed out at the next level by the Auburn coaching staff.
