Tray Matthews enrolled at Georgia: Bulldogs land safety recruit

Safety prospect Tray Matthews is one of Georgia’s early enrollees. He could see action as a true freshman for the Bulldogs.

Highly-regarded safety prospect Tray Matthews, who played for Newnan High School (GA), is officially a member of the Georgia Bulldogs football program. Matthews enrolled early, joining an impressive group of prospects who are on campus in Athens for the spring semester.

For additional Georgia football recruiting coverage, visit Dawg Sports.

Matthews recorded 80 tackles as a senior in 2012 and also picked off a pass. He is considered the fifth-best player at his position by Rivals and the No. 44 overall prospect in the class of 2013. He joins a Georgia recruiting class that is ranked among the nation’s best.

SB Nation’s Dawg Sports is optimistic about what Matthews will bring to the program, and feels as though he could be a major contributor for the Bulldogs right off the bat:

The true gem of the class at safety, however, is Tray Matthews, the 6’1”, 215 lb. beast of an athlete out of Newnan HS (the same program to produce Alec Ogletree). Matthews is a four-star prospect, and is rated the #7 safety in the country. He’s also a US Army All American, and, having already stepped foot on campus, could very well be manning the backfield for the Dawgs in September. He’s a hard hitter, he’s all muscle, and bank on it, he will be the next great safety at Georgia, even if it’s not in 2013 (though it very well could be).The Bulldogs have several pieces to replace in their secondary this upcoming season, including Bacarri Rambo and Shawn Williams, who were lost to graduation. Williams ranked second on the team in tackles in 2012 with 98, while Rambo was fourth with 73. Rambo also intercepted three passes.

Ratings: Rivals and 247Sports both rate Matthews as a four-star prospect.

Vitals: Matthews is 6’1”, weighs 192 pounds and runs a 4.50 40-yard dash, according to 247Sports.

Other offers: Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Michigan
