The Oregon Ducks shocked the recruiting world on Wednesday morning when 2013 Houston (Texas) Alief Taylor defensive end Torrodney Prevot signed with the Ducks over Texas A&M and USC.

Most predictions had Prevot headed to the Aggies after the news broke on Tuesday not going to sign with the Trojans. Oregon was always the dark horse, but it’s possible that they moved into the lead when Lancaster (Texas) defensive end Daeshon Hall committed to the Aggies earlier in the morning.

Despite maintaining his commitment to USC until Tuesday, Prevot took visits to Texas A&M and Oregon late in the process. He had been committed to USC since late July of 2012.

A consensus four-star prospect, the 6-3, 200-pound Prevot was a 2013 US Army All-American and participated in The Opening. At the end of the process, he was ranked as the no. 5 weakside defensive end and the no. 24 prospect in the state of Texas by the 247Sports composite rankings. He held offers from Arizona State, Baylor, California, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech, and West Virginia, among others.

The issue with Prevot as he enters college is that he needs to add a significant amount of weight to be competitive against bigger offensive linemen. In camps and other summer settings that included work out of pads, his quickness off the edge was always enough to win battles, but things change in college when players have to worry more about keeping contain and playing against the run instead of getting off the ball as quickly as possible.

Prevot has been at around 200 pounds for some time now, with his development slowed by the fact that he runs track in the spring. As a result, there are some questions about whether he will ever be able to reach 230 or more pounds

Since he is light, he will likely start off his career by playing as a situational pass rusher and working some at the linebacker position.
