Alex Collins’ mom runs off with letter of intent, refuses to let running back recruit sign with Arkansas

We officially have the most bizarre story of National Signing Day.

Yes, there’s now a LSUFreek version:

1:35 Update: There may soon be a resolution to this story if Collins can track down his dad and have him sign the letter of intent to Arkansas.

12:40 Update: Corey Long reported on ESPN that Collins’ mom has upstaged his signing ceremony and is refusing to let him sign his letter of intent to Arkansas. In fact, she cannot even be found.

“The papers are not there. I’ve been told by two different sources that Alex Collins’ mom confiscated the papers and took off and ran with them. They are looking for her currently. From what I understand, Alex is not at the school right now, he is looking for his mom. She was quite torn up about him leaving.”

Original: On Monday evening, Alex Collins chose the Arkansas Razorbacks. Collins is one of the highest rated recruits in the country, a five-star running back out of Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) South Plantation High School.

But not everyone was happy that Collins chose Arkansas over the hometown Miami Hurricanes.

In particular, Collins’ mom was rumored to be unhappy with his choice. Collins had a hard upbringing and either does not live with or did not live with for a time, but instead with his coach Doug Gatewood. But mommas are still mommas, and Collins’ was known to be strongly in favor of him staying home and signing with the Miami Hurricanes.

And that may have caused some of the drama today. Alex Collins was set to sign in the signing ceremony around 11 a.m., and was seen in a suit and tie according to students on twitter at his school.

But he didn’t show up. Could this be a situation in which the parent is refusing to sign the letter of intent? Perhaps. It certainly would not be unprecedented in the world of college football recruiting.

This is a situation worth monitoring, as the Hurricanes might pick up a tremendous prospect if Collins’ mother is successful in changing his mind about the situation.
