AUSTIN, Texas -- There comes a point in the recruiting process for many of the top players in the country where there really isn’t much to say.
Kd Cannon’s destination will be determined by offensive fit
One factor stands out above all others in the recruitment of the one of the top receivers in the country.
Sure, there’s plenty of speculation behind the scenes about which school leads or potential favorites, but the prospect offers little publicly, having answered the same questions countless times.
Count star Mount Pleasant (Texas) wide receiver Kd Cannon in that group at this point in the process.
Favorites? Nope. Schools standing out? Nope. Planned summer visits to schools? Nope, needs to talk with the parents. Any schools set to receive official visits? Nope.
Polite -- “Yes sir, no sir.” -- but perfunctory. Economical.
There is a timetable for his decision -- some time after his senior season -- and there's plenty of speculation that the Baylor Bears are the team to beat for him.
“I’m just real close to the coaches since I’ve been there a whole bunch of times, so we’ve kind of built a relationship,” he said in one of his more verbose statements during the short interview with SB Nation Recruiting on Friday.
And he has been in Waco often, more times than to any other school in the last year, a major accelerant to the fire of industry belief that Cannon will end up inking with the Bears come February.
He’s also been wearing his Baylor gear around to events like the Dallas NFTC and a recent track meet, though he was unadorned in any college colors on Friday.
The 6’0, 160-pound national top-50 player was willing to offer what has come to be known as the key factor in his recruitment: the style of offense a school runs, which he would prefer to be a wide-open spread attack. Exactly like the one operated by head coach Art Briles in Waco.
Or the one that new Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach Kliff Kingsbury is installing, a major reason why the Red Raiders are thought to be in the top group of contenders for Cannon's exceptional services.
While in Austin for the UIL state track meet, during which he ran in the 4A 100m and finished with a time of 10.86 seconds, Cannon took the opportunity to meet with Texas Longhorns head coach Mack Brown in his office, where they caught up on football and track.
However, the Longhorns are thought to be in the trailing group of schools for Cannon, which may also include the Oklahoma Sooners. He'll wait until the season to evaluate the Texas offense under new playcaller Major Applewhite, while the Oklahoma attack that has been extraordinarily prolific over the last few years isn't thought to have the same type of appeal for Cannon.
If another school is to seriously enter the picture and gain what would likely be his final official visit, it could be a school he has visited in the past, like Oklahoma State, TCU, or Texas A&M.
At the moment, there’s not much more to say, especially for Kd Cannon. So it goes.
