Four-star Texas S commit John Bonney taking official visit to Baylor

Another week, another official visit for the Houston product.

For the second straight week, Texas Longhorns safety commit John Bonney, a Houston (Texas) Lamar product, is taking an official visit to another school -- the Baylor Bears are the destination this weekend, according to his 247Sports profile page.

The 6'0, 182-pound Bonney took an official visit to see the Auburn Tigers last weekend, but as the Tigers were never in serious contention when he originally committed to Texas back in September, the visit wasn't seen as a serious threat to the chances of Bonney keeping his pledges to the Horns.

The Bears, however, are a different story -- they were perceived as the other finalist when he made his original pledge, even though he didn’t release any lists prior to the decision. In fact, 38% of Bonney’s predictions in the 247Sports Crystal Ball were for Baylor.

The reason, besides the recent success and the appeal of helping the Baylor defense continue to improve, is that Bonney and his family have ties to Art Briles from Briles’ time at Houston, as Bonney’s father played basketball for the Cougars.

Considering that Bonney was recruited by Oscar Giles and Duane Akina, two coaches who are no longer on the Texas staff, if Bonney’s ultimate decision comes down to which staff he has a greater comfort level with, Baylor would seem to be the clear choice.

A consensus four-star prospect and The Opening alum, Bonney is rated as the No. 19 safety nationally and the No. 31 player in the state of Texas, as well as the No. 251 prospect nationally by the 247Sports Composite rankings. He holds offers from California, Cincinnati, Houston, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Michigan State, North Carolina State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, SMU, Stanford, TCU, Texas Tech, UCLA, and Utah.

Texas was able to keep New Orleans (La.) St. Augustine cornerback Jermaine Roberts in the fold after his official last weekend resulted in the cancellation of his planned official visit to Ohio State, but will the Horns be able to keep Bonney, likely without the benefit of a visit?

Not if Art Briles has anything to say about it.
