Texas commit John Bonney still considering options, per father

According to an ESPN report, the consensus four-star safety is not a lock to sign with the Horns on Wednesday.

A report clarifying comments former Texas Longhorns head coach Mack Brown allegedly made telling committed prospects to look around after he resigned also revealed that Houston (Texas) Lamar safety John Bonney is still considering his options in advance of National Signing Day on Wednesday.

Bonney’s father, Jerry, spoke with ESPN to clarify his son’s comments to a Houston television station that had drawn some attention over the weekend and added that crucial bit of information about his son’s recruitment.

The consensus four-star safety has been committed to Texas since September, but recently took visits to Auburn and Baylor before traveling to Austin last weekend, where Bonney reportedly told another Texas commit that he was planning on sticking with the Longhorns.

However, it appears the situation is not that definitive, making Bonney one to watch on Wednesday for Texas fans and Baylor fans, as the Bears still seem like the most legitimate contenders to land a signature from the 6’0, 182-pounder due to the Bonney family’s lengthy relationship with Baylor head coach Art Briles that goes back to the coach’s time at Houston, where the elder Bonney played basketball.

Following Bonney’s visit to Baylor a week and a half ago, multiple predictions came in for the Bears in the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions for Bonney, but the general belief has been that the Longhorns survived the most critical period during which the Lamar product was likely to switch his commitment and getting Bonney around the new coaching staff and other committed prospects last weekend in Austin was easy to view in the same vein.

Bonney is ranked as the No. 19 safety nationally, the No. 31 prospect in Texas and the No. 249 prospect in the country. He also holds offers from a number of top programs, including Cal, LSU, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Stanford, TCU and UCLA.
