Williams, who goes to Junipero Serra (Calif.) High School, is listed at 6’1 and 205 pounds. The 247sports composite rates him as the 21st-best outside linebacker in the country and the 26th-best player in the state. Long considered an Oklahoma lean, the Sooners and UCLA were thought to be his two main choices, with Michigan, LSU and Florida also in the running.
The decision represented a major upset for the home-state Bruins, as the Oklahoma Sooners had been heavily favored to land the commitment from Williams -- 68% of the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions had Williams ending up in crimson and cream.
Here are some highlights from Williams’s junior year:
Back in May, SB Nation Recruiting Editor Bud Elliott scouted Williams and found he has good range for a high school recruit.
Although Williams primarily plays inside linebacker for his high school team, he projects better operating outside than as an interior thumper; however, he flashes impressive burst coming downhill through the A-gap. A speed ‘backer, the Gardena product is best running down plays in space and is an excellent tackler who squares up to the ball carrier and doesn’t give up yards after contact. Eliminating those “hidden” yards is something coaches love as it is the difference in a defender making an actual “plus” play and keeping the offense off schedule from a down and distance perspective.
The commitment from Williams gives UCLA 15 pledges in the 2014 class and will move the Bruins up to No. 26 nationally in the 247Sports Composite team rankings.
