South Carolina standing out for 2016 QB Avery McCall

The state’s top quarterback in 2016 is already focused on one program.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Charlotte Nike Football Training Camp was an opportunity for 2016 Dillon (S.C.) dual-threat quarterback Avery McCall to show why he’s already considered the top quarterback in the state for the 2016 recruiting cycle.

Even in warm ups, his arm strength was apparent as he threw passes with good velocity from his knees. When live drills started, the Dillon product also exhibited superior touch to allow wide receivers to run under the football.

After the event, the 6’0, 184-pounder spoke with SB Nation Recruiting about the current status of his recruitment. Considered a four-star prospect by Scout, McCall currently holds offers from Clemson, East Carolina, LSU, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

And while many prospects are reticent to name any schools as standing out, especially early in the process, McCall was quick to point out the home-state Gamecocks as a program that has caught his attention early.

It’s all a result of heavy early interest from head coach Steve Spurrier and his staff. Now ready to enter his junior season, McCall picked up his offer in December of 2012, right after he had concluded his freshman season. More than the early offer, however, McCall likes the Gamecocks because South Carolina has a “great program, great staff, great players, great everything.”

As for LSU, McCall said it would be “fun to be part of that team” because of the program’s tradition.

There’s also some research in the future for the dual-threat passer, as he wants to get to know more about the Tennessee program after picking up that offer.

One school that will have a chance to make an impression this summer is Georgia, as McCall is planning on taking a visit to Athens to get to know the program better. McCall hasn’t yet been in contact with the coaching staff, having received a few letters from the Bulldogs, but based on his current offer list, it wouldn’t be shocking for Georgia to enter his recruitment once he begins correspondence with the staff in advance of that visit.

Another program that McCall wants to hear from is Florida State due to their recent success, especially that of star quarterback Jameis Winston. Miami is also another state of Florida school that McCall would like to have recruit him.

Since it is early in the process, McCall doesn’t have a timetable for his decision, but he did say that academics will play the important factor in his eventual decision.
