Michigan State vs. Wisconsin 2012 results: Spartans come back to win in overtime

The Michigan State Spartans bested No. 25 Wisconsin, 16-13, in overtime.

Mary Langenfeld-US PRESSWIRE

With just more than one minute to go, Michigan State quarterback Andrew Maxwell hit running back Le'Veon Bell for a 5-yard touchdown, and a Dan Conroy extra point tied the game against No. 25 Wisconsin at 10-10, sending it into overtime, pending a one-minute scoring drive from Wisconsin.

That scoring drive didn’t come for the Badgers, and the game went into overtime.

Wisconsin took the ball to start the overtime period, and ended up getting a 43-yard field goal from Kyle French to put the pressure on the Spartans, following two incomplete passes and a loss of 1 yard. Michigan State took over and running back Le'Veon Bell picked up a 9-yard rush, followed by two rushes of 2 yards. On third down, Andrew Maxwell hit Bennie Fowler for a 12-yard touchdown to seal the game. Michigan State walked away with a 16-13 victory.

Box Score Hero: Stave looked as though he were on to something prior to going down with an injury, with 127 yards and only two incompletions, but once he went down, there wasn’t much else out there. This game was dominated by defense and there is no “box score hero” this time around.

Rankings Ramifications: Michigan State started off the season ranked by most sources, but nothing that could have happened in this game would have put them back in, given their record. A win is great, but they’re 5-4 and have plenty to go.

But Did They Cover? According to SB Nation’s NCAA football odds page, Wisconsin was favored to win this one by 5 points, and the over/under was set right around 40. Well, if you bet the over, you didn’t do well, and Wisconsin obviously didn’t cover.

Next Week’s Schedule: The Spartans will take on Nebraska on Nov. 3, and have just three games left to play. Wisconsin will take on Indiana after a a bye week, on Nov. 10.
