Michigan running back Fitzgerald Toussaint was carted off the field Saturday with an ankle injury and is now in surgery. Here’s a look at the injury.

    To the surprise of some teammates and coaches, Toussaint has already begun jogging and running lateral-movement drills. As he told Chengelis, he’s doing everything in his power to accelerate the recovery and get back in the action this spring:

    Before the injury last season, Toussaint played in 10 games, rushing for 514 yards and five touchdowns on 130 carries. This season, he’ll be trying to regain his form from 2011, when he rushed 187 times for 1,041 yards and nine touchdowns.

    Michigan RB Toussaint undergoes surgery on ankle

    Toussaint suffered the gruesome ankle injury on Michigan’s first possession of the game at the end of a 10-yard run. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and carted to the locker room before being taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

    The junior running back had carried the ball three times for 31 yards prior to going out with the injury. Entering the game, Toussaint had racked up 483 yards and five touchdowns on 127 carries. Last season, he rushed for 1,041 yards and nine scores on 187 carries.
