Matt Barkley injury update: USC QB may have separated shoulder

USC Trojans star quarterback Matt Barkley suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder late in the fourth quarter against the UCLA Bruins on Saturday.

USC Trojans starting quarterback Matt Barkley suffered an injury to what appeared to be his right shoulder, which is the star quarterback's throwing shoulder, during Saturday's matinee against the UCLA Bruins. It's unclear what the injury is, but according to Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News, Barkley may have suffered a separated shoulder.

Barkley, one of USC’s four captains, suffered the injury late in the fourth quarter during a Trojans drive. With under three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, UCLA’s linebacker Anthony Barr drove Barkley to the ground for a sack. The senior quarterback remained on the ground for a few moments before walking off of the field under his own power.

USC summoned freshman quarterback Max Wittek to take over for their former Heisman front-runner, and they had the freshman finish the game out because Barkley was unable to return to action.

The potential loss of Barkley would be a crushing blow to the Trojans, who will be preparing for a visit from Notre Dame on Saturday, Nov. 24, but it would also be a terrible way for Barkley to end his collegiate career, if the injury keeps him out for extended time. Barkley choose to return for his senior season at USC instead of entering the NFL Draft last year.
