Matt Barkley to return for USC in Sun Bowl

After missing the season finale against No. 1 Notre Dame, Matt Barkley is expected to return to play in his final game for USC.

Matt Barkley is expected to end his career with the USC Trojans by returning to play in the Sun Bowl against Georgia Tech. The quarterback missed the team's season finale against the No. 1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish with a sprained shoulder.

A chance to play in a bowl game is significant for Barkley and the Trojans, who were ineligible the past two seasons because of NCAA sanctions from the fallout of Reggie Bush’s Heisman Trophy.

Barkley suffered the injury late in the loss to the UCLA Bruins and watched the final offensive drive for USC from the sidelines. In his place, freshman Max Wittek started against the Irish, passing for 186 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

For much of the season, Barkley was in contention for the Heisman, and despite missing the past game, posted strong numbers with 3,273 passing yards and 36 touchdowns. He’s expected to be a high draft pick in next year’s NFL Draft.
