The North Carolina Tar Heels scored 24 consecutive points in the third quarter to erase a 14-point deficit against the Maryland Terrapins and earn their eighth win of the season, 45-38.

North Carolina, thanks to five passing touchdowns by quarterback Bryn Renner, defeated Maryland on Saturday.


Quarterback Bryn Renner threw two of his five touchdown passes in the third quarter, one to wide receiver Quinshad Davis and the other to fellow receiver Erik Highsmith. Renner finished 28 for 39 passing for 305 yards and no interceptions.
Tar Heels running back Giovani Bernard ran for 163 yards on 27 carries and scored one touchdown in the third quarter. Davis caught nine passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
Terrapins starting quarterback Shawn Petty completed 16 of 35 passes for 208 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Terrapin wide receiver Stefon Diggs also threw an 8-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter to receiver Matt Furstenburg and also scored on a 99-yard kickoff return to start the second half.
Both teams’ seasons are over with the Terrapins finishing 4-8 and the Tar Heels having banned themselves from the postseason because of NCAA violations.
