Notre Dame took an early 6-3 lead on field goals, but then Pitt seemed to wrest control of the game away. Ray Graham had a 16 yard rushing touchdown, Tino Sunseri found J.P. Holtz for a nine yard score, and a Kevin Harper 21-yard field goal gave the Panthers a 20-6 lead going into the 4th quarter.
However, a quick Irish drive cut the lead to 20-12 when Everett Golson found TJ Jones (Notre Dame would miss the extra point). Then a late drive had Golson hitting Theo Riddick, and Golson would tie the game with a quarterback keeper.
After the two teams exchanged field goals in the first overtime, neither would score in the second. Pitt would force and recover a Notre Dame fumble at the goal-line, only to miss the game-winning field goal. Pitt would then kick a field goal in the third overtime before Notre Dame drove the ball into the end zone and win it on a one yard keeper by Everett Golson.
