The Mount Union Purple Raiders bested the St. Thomas Tommies on Friday, taking home the NCAA Division III Championship in the process. Mount Union jumped out to an immediate two-score lead with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter, and didn’t look back, winning the game 28-10.

The Mount Union Purple Raiders won their nation-leading 11th NCAA Division III Championship on Friday, besting St. Thomas by a score of 28-10.

It’s their first national championship since 2008, though they’ve appeared in every final since 2005. With 11 national championships, they now have as many as the next three schools combined (UW-Whitewater, Augustana and Ithaca).
Mount Union running back Jake Simon carried the ball 21 times for 88 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while quarterback Kevin Burke added a touchdown of his own. Both of Simon’s touchdowns were 1-yard runs, coming in the first quarter and the fourth quarter.
Burke hit Chris Denton for 17 yards for his touchdown, which came late in the third quarter to put the Purple Raiders up 21-10. Burke was ultimately 20-for-28 with 221 yards.
St. Thomas only managed 120 yards passing and 72 yards rushing, with no running back getting more than 27 yards. They buried themselves deep late in the first when they allowed a punt from their own end zone to be blocked. Charles Dieuseul recovered the punt in the end zone for a special-teams touchdown.
